One night, just a few months after we decided to work full-time on Holstee, Mike and I were working late from our office space near Union Square in New York.

At that time, Holstee’s focus was on our original product — a t-shirt with a holster-positioned pocket on the side for a phone or notepad (hence our name, “Hols-tee”). On this particular evening, we were working extra late and were rather stressed trying to figure out the supply chain logistics of producing a t-shirt sustainably in the U.S.
It was one of those trying nights where I began to ask myself if starting our company was worth all the stresses. All of the highs and lows.
Mike shared a great analogy that I have never forgotten and often reference.
“In life, you can either choose the merry-go-round or the rollercoaster.”
With one, you get safety and consistency — but it’s predictable and boring. The scenes don’t change, the people on the ride don’t change, and it goes nowhere but in circles.
With the other, you get highs and lows. Sometimes you will go fast, and at times painfully slow. It’s exciting and it’s terrifying. In one moment, you will feel like you are on top of the world and at others, it will feel like your world is completely upside down.
Which ride you get on is up to you.
This is your life and it’s your ticket to ride.
