It’s loaded in part because of how phrases like “follow your passion” have managed to not just define but also at times confuse an entire generation.

It suggests that each of us have this one passion and all we need to do is find it in order to be happy.

The thing is, for most of us, there is no “one” thing. I have learned this both personally and from speaking to thousands of people on this exact topic over the past eight years.

So rather than trying to find and follow that “one” passion, we might try broadening our search. For those who like clear roadmaps, I’ve found these three steps to be helpful for me:

  1. Identify your interests.
  2. Experiment with them to see which draw you in the most.
  3. Put in the work to dive deeper into those interests and perhaps even develop some level of mastery in them (researchers say that we need at least 10,000 hours of practice to become an expert at something).

But this isn’t the only way to live with passion. It’s also about turning off our auto-pilot and living life fully and mindfully. It means taking time for the things that bring us into a state of flow, where we are so in the moment that time just disappears.

For some, following passions might lead to 10,000 hours of practice. For others, it’s just about moving through life more truly awake.
