It’s easy to find ourselves in a dark place.

Just open the news and read the headlines and it can feel like the whole world is falling apart.

We have a megalomaniac with the temper of a two-year-old and the manners of a high school bully in the most important office in America.

Climate change is happening, and the people with the power to take action have instead decided to try to squeeze every last bit of profit from the planet.

Our technology has been carefully designed to make us addicted to it, which means that the next generation is essentially glued to a screen.

We can’t trust the media; they’re sensationalized for ratings.

And that’s only the beginning… let’s not forget the guns, racism, sexism, homophobia, mass incarcerations, addictive pharmaceuticals, GMO seeds, broken health care, high fructose everything, stranded refugees, religious extremists, plastic in our oceans, slave labor, fracking, global hunger, precious metal mining, honor killings, sweatshops, pollution, and lack of clean drinking water.

Meanwhile, every advertisement we see has someone smiling and telling us to buy some shit that will make us feel better about how the world is going to shit. But nine times out of 10, that purchase only helps perpetuate the problem.

At work, we have two deadlines by end of day, 65 emails in our inbox, a boss that’s threatened by our work, a mom that says we don’t call enough, and a boyfriend that wants more attention.

We haven’t been to the gym in a week, we’re flushing all our money away on rent, and we’re not saving enough for a house or kids. Speaking of which, we’re 35 and should be making babies while we still can, but that could mean the end of our careers. We only get four weeks maternity leave, six if the doctors decide to slice open our stomach.

Bottom line is, we don’t have enough time for our own lives, let alone the massive problems plaguing this dysfunctional world.

Oy… that got dark pretty quick.

But when there is dark, there is always light. The light is you.

Your voice.

Your actions.

Your ideas.

Your presence.

You can’t stay in that dark place. The world needs your light.

Drowning.

These days, I am finding myself wrapped up in the news — devastating tragedies, one after another.

My mind is filled with questions. Why would someone do this? How could it be possible? Why does it keep happening? What can be done now? The questions don’t seem to end.

I recently reached a point at which I was

Sandwich of the future.

I love sandwiches — both making and eating them. So when I heard that there was a famous man in Syracuse, Sicily, who makes just a few dozen sandwiches a day and has a constant line out the door, my interest peaked.

Turns out he doesn’t just make sandwiches but he

Wait till you see the flowers by the pool.

September 2015 was a big month for us.

I was about to get married, Dave was turning 30, and our third co-founder, Fabian, was about to start a new project after eight years of working with us on Holstee.

So at the very last minute, we decided to go on a combo bachelor-birthday-send-off weekend trip. We booked the only place we could find that was near nature and had availability that night. We borrowed a car and made our way north up Route 28 out of New York City.

When we arrived at the bungalow we’d booked, we looked around. Without saying anything, we knew exactly what one another was thinking
